Difficulty creating a field with custom values

Description of the issue

How can I set up a field with a drop-down list with custom values without getting an error message that the value has to be formatted as if it were a date? When I go to 'View' and 'Layout Mode' and look at the field I've created it shows in 'Data Formatting' that 'Date' is depressed; but I cannot change this to 'Number'. Is there a way for me to change this? This is not a date-related field, it needs to be filled with text and there are custom values set up, but every time I insert these values I get an error message.
